A LAKEVILLE TRADITION: MORE THAN JUST A CAR SHOW
Pan-O-Prog is the heartbeat of summer in Lakeville. While the South Metro has plenty of car shows, nothing compares to the scale and community spirit of the Friday Night Cruise. I’ve been documenting this event since 2023, and it remains the highlight of each year. From the staging show at Lakeville South to the packed sidewalks of Holyoke Ave, it’s a privilege to capture this event in my own hometown.
The Pan-O-Prog Cruise Night (short for "Panorama of Progress") is a staple of the Lakeville community celebrations. Unlike typical "Cars and Coffee" events that cater strictly to enthusiasts, Cruise Night brings out the whole town. From families lining the curbs with lawn chairs to local businesses hosting watch parties, the atmosphere in Downtown Lakeville is unmatched. As a local photographer, I focus on capturing that specific energy. It’s about the gleaming chrome of a '67 Chevelle reflecting the neon lights of the carnival, and the roar of engines echoing between the historic buildings on Holyoke.
CLASSIC CARS CRUISE THROUGH DOWNTOWN LAKEVILLE
To ensure the best possible coverage of the hundreds of vehicles that participate, I split my time between two primary areas along the cruise:
Location 1: Staging at Lakeville South High School
The afternoon begins at the Lakeville South High School parking lots. This is the "golden hour" for detail enthusiasts. I spend this time walking the rows of parked classics, muscle cars, and modern exotics. This phase allows me to get clean, stationary shots of the builds before they hit the road. If you’re looking for engine bay shots or interior details, this is where the magic happens.
Location 2: Holyoke Avenue in Downtown Lakeville
Once the cruise officially rolls out, the environment shifts. I move downtown to capture the cars in motion. My favorite vantage point is right outside the Bonus Room, shooting back toward the Lakeville Arts Center.
This specific angle captures the "Hero Shot" of the night: a vehicle in the foreground with the Pan-O-Prog ferris wheel and carnival rides glowing in the background. It’s a shot that perfectly captures the festival's spirit and has become a staple of my annual coverage.
5 TIPS FOR GETTING THE BEST PHOTOS OF YOUR CAR AT PAN-O-PROG CRUISE NIGHT
If you’re participating in the Pan-O-Prog Car Cruise, presented by Jeff Belzer's Chevrolet, and want to ensure you get a great shot for the gallery, here are a few tips from behind the lens:
Tip 1: Don't Be a Stranger
If you see me walking around capturing photos, feel free to pull me aside! I'd be more than happy to grab a photo of you and your vehicle, or any other shot you may have in mind.
Tip 2: Mind the Gap
Leave a bit of space between you and the car in front as you drive through the cruise route. It gives me a clear line of sight to your vehicle’s profile and wheels.
Tip 3: Light Up the Night
As the sun goes down, the carnival lights at the Arts Center come to life. Especially if you're coming through Downtown Lakeville later in the cruise, try to keep your headlights on to add that extra "pop" to the frame.
Tip 4: Keep a Consistent Speed
Often times drivers will see the camera, and hit the gas. Especially when I'm taking long-exposure panning shots, these unpredictable speeds make it more difficult to keep your vehicle in focus. Just keep on cruising, and I'll be sure to get a stunning shot as you roll through Holyoke Ave!
Tip 5: Tell Others About My Photos
The key action here is you actually getting the photos of your vehicle. If you're reading this, you're clearly in the right spot. Be sure to share this page with other Cruise Night attendees to ensure they're able to download photos of their ride at Pan-O-Prog!
